CHICAGO (July 14, 2026) — United Airlines is redefining the economy cabin experience once again. The airline today announced a major seating innovation for its brand-new Airbus A321XLR fleet: a dedicated row of Economy Plus seats featuring a permanently fixed center console table instead of a middle passenger.

This premium "elbow room" option is slated to go on sale later this year, making United the only U.S. carrier to offer this specific configuration.

The "Elbow Room" Row: How It Works

Designed to take the squeeze out of longer flights, the designated row replaces the dreaded middle seat with a custom-engineered workspace and storage area:

  • Fixed Shared Table: A premium console stretches from armrest to armrest over the vacant middle seat. It is finished with a soft, leather-like covering and includes two integrated cup holders.

  • Double the Space: Window and aisle passengers in this row get a massive boost in personal space, ideal for working on laptops, sharing snacks, or simply stretching out.

  • Extra Legroom: This layout is positioned within the Economy Plus section, meaning passengers also enjoy the standard three inches of extra legroom.
             

"We're investing nose-to-tail across our fleet and giving customers choice and value in every cabin," said Andrew Nocella, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer. "The XLR is our newest aircraft and not only offers all-aisle access lie-flat seats in United Polaris® but now also includes seats in Economy Plus with extra leg and elbow room."

The airline plans to roll out this layout across its entire order of 50 Airbus A321XLRs and is already exploring bringing the design to other aircraft types. It joins the recently announced United Relax Row—a widebody couch-seat concept launching on Boeing 777s and 787s in early 2027—as part of United's aggressive cabin modernization.
