KUALA LUMPUR — Passengers traveling through Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) are being advised by national carrier Malaysia Airlines to plan ahead, as temporary airspace restrictions linked to Malaysia’s 69th National Day Flypast 2026 are expected to impact flight operations later this month.

According to an official travel advisory issued by Malaysia Airlines, temporary closures within the Kuala Lumpur Terminal Control Area will be implemented to facilitate rehearsals for the aerial display. These restrictions will temporarily suspend all aircraft take-offs and landings at KLIA during designated windows, forcing the carrier to retime a series of flights operating to and from KLIA Terminal 1.

The airline confirmed that the retimed schedules will affect operations on August 26, 27, 28, 29, and 31, 2026. Malaysia Airlines stated that passengers with affected bookings will be notified directly via their registered contact details. However, the carrier is also urging all travelers to check their latest flight status through the airline’s official website or mobile application before setting off for the airport.

Four-Hour Early Arrival Advised

Malaysia Airlines noted that the airspace restrictions coincide with the upcoming school holidays, creating an anticipated peak travel period. The airline expects significantly higher passenger volumes at KLIA between August 26 and September 6.

Consequently, Malaysia Airlines is advising passengers departing from Terminal 1 to arrive at the airport at least four hours before their scheduled departure time. This will allow sufficient time for check-in, document verification, immigration, and security clearance. The airline warned that waiting periods at check-in, immigration, and security points could exceed 45 minutes during busy periods.

Additionally, travelers are reminded by the carrier to ensure their passports and travel documents are valid, while international passengers should verify entry and exit requirements with relevant authorities prior to departure.

Official Check-In Deadlines & Safety Requirements

To help passengers navigate the rush, Malaysia Airlines outlined key operational cut-offs and safety guidelines:
Check-In Timelines: Malaysia Airlines says passengers can complete web or mobile check-in from 48 hours until 90 minutes before departure. Self-service kiosks are also available at KLIA to print boarding passes and baggage tags.
Counter & Gate Closures: Check-in counters for both domestic and international flights will close strictly 60 minutes before departure. Boarding gates will close 30 minutes prior to departure.
Cabin Baggage Allowance: The airline reminded travelers that Economy Class passengers may carry one cabin-size bag weighing up to 7kg, while Business Class passengers are permitted two cabin-size bags and one personal item with a combined weight of up to 14kg.
Power Bank Regulations: Malaysia Airlines highlighted that power banks and lithium batteries are strictly prohibited in checked baggage and must be carried in cabin baggage. Furthermore, the airline explicitly advises passengers not to place power banks in overhead compartments, requiring them to be kept under the seat in front or in the seat pocket.

With heavy passenger traffic expected, Malaysia Airlines reiterated that travelers should plan their journeys carefully, monitor official updates, and rely on their latest flight information as schedules remain subject to change.
