TOKYO — In a decisive move to restore public confidence, Japan Airlines (JAL) has announced a comprehensive alcohol ban for its entire cabin crew workforce during all domestic and international work layovers. Effective October 27, 2025, the strict new policy impacts more than 6,000 flight attendants, completely eliminating the consumption of alcohol while stationed away from home. This sweeping mandate reflects the airline's zero-tolerance stance following a series of highly publicized, alcohol-related operational disruptions that have drawn intense scrutiny from both travelers and civil aviation regulators.

The catalyst for this latest regulatory overhaul occurred on May 23, 2026, at Hiroshima Airport. A senior female cabin attendant in her 50s, scheduled to work on Flight JL252 to Tokyo Haneda, failed a mandatory pre-flight breathalyzer examination roughly one hour before the scheduled departure. Subsequent investigations revealed that she had consumed two beers and two glasses of wine at a hotel lounge from the previous evening into the night. While JAL management acted swiftly to remove the crew member from duty, the sudden logistics of sourcing a qualified replacement delayed the flight by approximately 40 to 42 minutes, directly inconveniencing the 186 passengers on board.

This disruption marks a critical tipping point for the carrier, which has been under intense pressure to reform its internal culture. In December 2024, Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism issued a formal business improvement order to JAL after a separate incident where an attendant was caught drinking champagne while on duty during a flight from Narita to Honolulu. Following that breach, the government strictly recommended that JAL overhaul its operations and oversight. Expressing deep regret for this latest lapse, JAL issued an official apology acknowledging the severe damage done to public trust and vowed that strict disciplinary measures would be enforced against any crew members who compromise safety and professionalism.
