A helicopter carrying out a rescue mission on Mount Kilimanjaro has crashed, killing all five people on board, according to aviation authorities. The accident occurred between Barafu Camp and the Kibo Summit, a high-altitude and challenging section of the mountain frequently used for medical evacuations. The victims included the pilot and individuals being transported for emergency medical assistance.

The Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority confirmed the incident and stated that preliminary information indicates the helicopter was conducting a legitimate rescue operation at the time of the crash. Due to the extreme weather conditions, thin air, and rugged terrain around the summit area, rescue and recovery efforts have been complex and time-consuming. Emergency teams were dispatched immediately to secure the site and retrieve the victims.

Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the cause of the crash, examining factors such as weather conditions, aircraft performance, and operational procedures. Helicopter operations around Mount Kilimanjaro are considered high-risk due to sudden weather changes and altitude-related challenges. The tragedy has renewed calls for enhanced safety measures and stricter operational protocols for high-altitude aviation activities in Tanzania.
