A tragic aviation accident occurred today, April 29, 2026, at Parafield Airport in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, resulting in the deaths of two people and leaving several others injured.

The Incident

At approximately 2:10 pm, a twin-engine Diamond DA42 aircraft crashed into Hangar 54 shortly after takeoff. The impact triggered a massive explosion and a fierce blaze, fueled by a significant amount of aviation fuel stored within the hangar.

  • Casualties: The pilot and the sole passenger on board the aircraft were killed instantly.

  • Injuries: At least 11 people on the ground—believed to be airport ground crew and students—were injured.
    • One person is in critical condition with life-threatening burns.
    • Two others are in serious condition.
    • Several others were treated for smoke inhalation at local hospitals, including the Royal Adelaide and Lyell McEwin.

    Emergency Response

The Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) deployed 57 firefighters to the scene. The response was complicated because the aircraft's impact damaged the hangar's fire hydrant system, rendering the internal sprinklers useless.

Thick black smoke blanketed the surrounding area, leading authorities to advise residents in nearby suburbs to stay indoors and close windows.

    Investigation

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has launched a full investigation. Specialist investigators from Canberra and Brisbane are being deployed to:

    • Examine the wreckage of the Diamond DA42.

    • Recover flight data and aircraft components.

    • Interview witnesses, including one who reportedly saw the plane "nosedive" shortly after takeoff.

    Official Statements

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas described the event as a "tragic incident" and expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased. Parafield Airport remains closed to all air traffic while the site is secured for investigators.
