A routine departure from Denver International Airport (DEN) turned into a horrific scene late Friday night when a Frontier Airlines aircraft struck and killed a trespasser during its takeoff roll. The collision sparked an engine fire and forced an emergency evacuation of more than 230 people.
The Incident
At approximately 11:19 PM on May 8, 2026, Frontier Flight 4345—an Airbus A321neo bound for Los Angeles—was accelerating down Runway 17L. According to airport officials, an unidentified individual had scaled a perimeter fence and entered the active runway just two minutes before the impact.
The aircraft was traveling at high speed when it struck the pedestrian. Chilling air traffic control (ATC) audio captured the moment the pilots realized the gravity of the situation:
"Tower, Frontier 4345, we’re stopping on the runway. We just hit somebody. We have an engine fire."
Evacuation and Injuries
The impact triggered a brief but intense fire in one of the engines, sending smoke into the cabin and causing panic among the 224 passengers and 7 crew members. The flight crew immediately aborted the takeoff and ordered an emergency evacuation via the inflatable slides.
-
Casualties: The trespasser, who was not an airport employee, was pronounced dead at the scene.
-
Injuries: 12 passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation; five were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
-
Passenger Accounts: Travelers described hearing a "giant bang" followed by the sight of flames outside the windows and thick smoke filling the cabin within seconds.
Investigation and Security Concerns
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that the individual "deliberately scaled" the airport's security fence. While Denver officials stated that a preliminary check showed the fence line to be intact, the incident has raised urgent questions about perimeter security at one of the nation’s busiest airports.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched full investigations into the breach and the subsequent engine failure.
Frontier Airlines released a statement expressing deep sadness over the event, noting they are cooperating fully with authorities to determine how the security lapse occurred. Runway 17L remained closed for several hours for a forensic sweep but has since reopened.
