HYDERABAD – A major security alert was triggered at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) on Friday, May 15, 2026, after a Lufthansa flight arriving from Frankfurt (FRA) was targeted by a bomb threat.
The Incident
Lufthansa flight LH754, operated by a Boeing 747-8, was en route to Hyderabad when the airline’s customer support received a chilling email. The message claimed that an explosive device had been planted on board the aircraft and was timed to detonate before the plane could touch down at its destination.
Emergency Response
Upon receiving the threat, aviation authorities and security agencies at Hyderabad’s Shamshabad airport were immediately placed on high alert. Emergency protocols were activated, and ground teams, including the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), prepared for the aircraft's arrival.
Despite the tense situation, the Boeing 747 landed safely at Hyderabad. Following standard international security procedures, the aircraft was not taken to the regular passenger terminal. Instead, it was escorted to a remote isolation bay for a comprehensive security sweep.
Security Sweep and Results
Once the "Queen of the Skies" was safely parked and all passengers and crew were evacuated to a secure area, security personnel began a methodical inspection.
-
Bomb Disposal Squads combed through the passenger cabin, cockpit, and cargo holds.
Anti-sabotage checks were performed on all luggage and catering supplies.Official reports indicate that no immediate threat or suspicious device was found during the initial search. The threat is currently being treated as a hoax, though a detailed investigation into the origin of the email is ongoing.
Wider Disruptions
The security alert coincided with challenging weather conditions in Hyderabad. While flight LH754 was being inspected, strong winds forced at least two other incoming flights—an Emirates flight from Dubai and a domestic flight from Pune—to divert to alternate airports after unsuccessful landing attempts.
Lufthansa has not yet released a formal statement regarding the specific aircraft's return to service, but authorities confirmed that all passengers and crew members are safe.
