Rome, Italy — The Italian Ministry of Defence has officially awarded a major defences aviation contract to Airbus Defence and Space for the procurement of six A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft.

The deal, valued at approximately €1.393 billion (~$1.6 billion), was disclosed via documents published on the European Union’s Tenders Electronic Daily (TED) procurement platform. The contract represents a comprehensive package that includes the six widebody tankers alongside 122 months (just over 10 years) of integrated logistics support.

A Major Strategic Shift: Dumping Boeing for Airbus

The signing of this contract marks a massive geopolitical and tactical pivot for the Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Military), closing a quarter-century chapter of Italian-American tanker cooperation.

  • The Original Plan: Rome previously operated four Boeing KC-767A tankers (in service since 2011). In 2022, Italy announced plans to replace and expand this fleet by purchasing six new American-built Boeing KC-46 Pegasus tankers.
  • The Pivot: By mid-2024, Italy abruptly suspended its plans with Boeing due to changing operational requirements, technical complexities, and ongoing readiness issues/delays plaguing the KC-46 Pegasus program in the U.S.
  • The Result: Italy reopened the restricted European tender. When the final decision was made, Airbus was the only bidder left on the table that successfully met the technical requirements, sealing a definitive victory over its American rival.

Fleet Capabilities & Upgrades

The transition to the A330 MRTT platform gives the Italian Air Force a massive boost in strategic capability, resulting in a 50% growth in Italy's overall tanker fleet size (moving from 4 aircraft to 6).

Compared to both the outgoing KC-767A and the rejected KC-46A, the Airbus platform offers:

  • More Fuel: An estimated 15% to 16% increase in overall fuel offload capacity.
  • More Payload: A 50% boost in cargo payload capability (up to 45 tonnes).
  • Massive Passenger Increase: Up to a 200% rise in passenger transport capacity (carrying up to 300 passengers in a standard military layout).
  • Multi-Mission Versatility: The aircraft simultaneously handles aerial refuelling (equipped with both "flying boom" and "hose and drogue" systems to support multi-national aircraft), medical evacuations (MEDEVAC), and strategic troop transport.

Note: Public documents have not yet specified whether Italy is procuring the standard A330 MRTT configuration or the upgraded MRTT+ (based on the newer A330-800neo platform).

Strengthening NATO Interoperability

By choosing the A330 MRTT, Italy becomes the 19th operator nation of the aircraft type globally. This integration aligns Rome heavily with Europe's largest multinational tanker ecosystem.

With many European neighbors and NATO allies—including France, the UK, Spain, and Canada—already flying the A330 MRTT, the shared fleet scale directly improves parts availability, training infrastructure, and collective aerial refuelling capabilities across active theatres like the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe.
